What do you need to think about when making a change at the operational level in your IT?

For a more effective transition.
Change, or a series of changes, can often be a difficult process due to external and/or internal forces. In view of the speed of technological change, changes in IT have become frequent, either to keep up with the market or to outpace it. Therefore, in this article, we want to highlight the most important elements you need to consider for any operational IT change, to ensure that the transition takes place with the least amount of resistance and within the timeframe.

Before making changes, you as a manager need to be able to answer the following questions:

  1. Can the objectives be achieved more easily and/or quickly?
  2. Will other departments or services be affected by the change? How will they be affected?
  3. How will all our stakeholders react?
  4. Will I provide enough resources to implement the change?

First of all, it is important to keep in mind that this kind of change usually has an impact on a whole organisation, department or service. Therefore, it is important to assess the overall impact and scope of each change and whether the risks can be reduced or even eliminated. For example, when changing data storage, the security, accessibility and usability of the data must be carefully analysed.

Secondly, it is important to ensure that the change is in line with the company’s short-, medium- and long-term strategy and resources. It is essential that a change takes into account the current situation and the target situation in order to be sustainable. A change that is in line with a company’s vision and mission is an important step along the way.

We conclude this article with the most important element: people. Not only do you need to consider all the people who will be affected in your company, but also the views, fears and motivations of each individual for such a change. Only if you understand the resistance, anticipate it and motivate people can the change be accelerated.
